Child Safeguarding
Every child has the right to grow up safe.
A childhood should be a time to learn, explore, build relationships, and imagine a future filled with possibility.
For children facing poverty, displacement, vulnerability, or social exclusion, that sense of security can be fragile.
At Agama Charity, safeguarding is fundamental to our work.
We are committed to creating environments in which every child is treated with dignity, respected as an individual, and protected from abuse, exploitation, neglect, and harm.
Protection is part of everything we do.
Safeguarding is not an additional layer of our work. It is a responsibility that informs how we design programmes, select partners, engage communities, communicate about children, and deliver support.
Our approach is guided by one principle:
The safety, dignity, rights, and best interests of every child come first.
Our safeguarding commitment
Agama Charity is committed to maintaining a culture in which children are listened to, respected, and protected.
We work to ensure that:
Children are protected from harm
We take reasonable and appropriate measures to prevent abuse, exploitation, neglect, and other forms of harm.
Children are treated with dignity
Every child deserves respect, regardless of their circumstances, background, gender, ability, or status.
Children are heard
We encourage safe and age-appropriate participation and take children's concerns seriously.
Concerns are acted upon
Safeguarding concerns are treated responsibly and referred through appropriate reporting and response procedures.
Privacy is respected
We handle information, images, and personal stories involving children responsibly and with appropriate safeguards.
Our people understand their responsibilities
Staff, volunteers, partners, and representatives are expected to uphold appropriate standards of behaviour when engaging with children and communities.
A culture of safeguarding
Protecting children requires more than policies.
It requires vigilance, accountability, responsible leadership, and a culture in which everyone understands their role.
We therefore seek to ensure that safeguarding considerations are integrated throughout our programmes and partnerships—from planning and implementation to monitoring, learning, and evaluation.
We expect those representing or working with Agama Charity to conduct themselves in ways that protect children and uphold their dignity.
Where concerns arise, they must be taken seriously and addressed through appropriate channels.
Silence should never stand between a child and protection.
Children at the centre
We believe children should not be defined by vulnerability.
They are individuals with rights, voices, abilities, aspirations, and potential.
Our responsibility is therefore not simply to protect children from harm, but to help create conditions in which they can participate, learn, develop, and pursue their aspirations safely.
This means listening to children.
It means understanding the environments in which they live.
And it means working alongside families, communities, local organisations, and partners to strengthen lasting systems of protection.
Responsible storytelling
Every child has a story.
But a child's story is not ours to own.
When Agama Charity communicates about children, we seek to ensure that their dignity, privacy, safety, and best interests remain paramount.
We avoid representations that sensationalise hardship or reduce children to their circumstances.
We aim instead to tell stories that recognise their humanity, celebrate their potential, and communicate the importance of lasting change.
We believe children should be represented with dignity—not defined by need.
Safeguarding through partnership
Strong child protection requires collaboration.
We work with local communities and partners who share our commitment to creating safer environments for children.
We expect our partnerships to reflect appropriate safeguarding principles and responsibilities, proportionate to the nature and context of the work.
Through collaboration, learning, and accountability, we seek to strengthen the systems that protect children—not only within our programmes, but within the communities we serve.
Our responsibility
Safeguarding is a continuing commitment.
It requires us to listen, learn, improve, and remain accountable.
Agama Charity will continue to strengthen its safeguarding practices as our programmes and partnerships develop, recognising that effective child protection is an ongoing process.
Our promise is simple:
To put children first.
To protect their dignity.
To listen to their voices.
To take concerns seriously.
And to help create a world in which every child can grow up safe, respected, and full of possibility.
Speak Up
If you have a safeguarding concern relating to a child, a member of our team, a volunteer, partner, programme, or activity associated with Agama Charity, we encourage you to report it through our designated safeguarding channel.
Your concern matters.
All concerns should be handled responsibly and, where appropriate, with confidentiality and protection from retaliation.
